The Allure | Marine Layer San Francisco
Your new provider of seriously soft t-shirts
and endless summer surf style.
by Joshua P. Ferguson
I swear you will never want to take these things off. That's what I tell anyone who asks me about my new favorite t-shirts (and anyone who gets even a glancing brush against one asks). I picked them up at the newly opened Chicago outpost of Bay Area clothier Marine Layer. The label focuses on basics with a little bit of flair and a heavy dose of vintage warm weather surf vibes, specifically the Endless Summer kind.
Founded by Cali boys Mike Natenshon and Adam Lynch, Marine Layer is the product of an obsessive mission to recreate Nathenshon's favorite t-shirt, lost forever after his girlfriend accidentally tossed it. With their exclusive blend of ultra-soft pima cotton and modal, a natural type of rayon made, in this case, from 95% recycled beech wood, we'd call the mission a success.
Both the men's and the women's lines focus heavily on basics for this summer's collection, including a rainbow of basic and graphic tees, polos, henleys, tanks and maxi dresses. Since it's founding in '09, the collections also extend to wovens, sweaters, scarfs, a couple of outdoorsy jackets and bottoms, especially in when the winter garb ebbs away from surf in favor of camping and bonfires.
From our vantage, Marine Layer is the perfect combination of lifestyle and comfort—two qualities that should be at the center of any wardrobe, especially for those aspiring to pair their closets and dressers down to a capsule wardrobe. The t-shirts have become an instant mainstay in ours and we can't wait until a chill hits the air here in Chicago to see what knit offerings are for fall. We might just have to do a follow-up post.
Marine Layer Chicago is open now in Bucktown at 1646 N. Damen Ave. & be sure to check out their Foggy Blog for sales, updates and lifestyle music playlists.
