Transitions I - III
For those sick of enduring the wait for more of masked producer SBTRKT's sublime soulful bass music, that wait finally ended today with the announcement of Transitions, a series of six instrumental tracks spread across three EPs, each with "animated" packaging designed by A Hidden Place, the artist behind SBTRKT's iconic tribal masks.
The series gets its inspiration from London beatmaker's music prior to his 2011 self-titled debut LP. Whereas the record featured noteworthy vocal contributions, most notably from Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano and Sampha, Transitions reaches back to the instrumental sound that dominated his catalog prior to that.
"This is music written over the last year, whilst recording for my second album," SBTRKT says. "Much of the music I released before my debut album was instrumental and I want to continue to share this side of the music I make." With the crunch and clap of his skipping productions swirling with the electric hum of synths and deep bass underpinnings, the output is at times moodier than the brightness he displays on SBTRKT, but it all displays his keen ability to hover between vintage UK Garage, wobbly hip-hop instrumentals, and soulful bass ambiance.
All six tracks can be streamed now at transitions.sbtrkt.com, where they are also available for digital download. Later this month, each EP will see a vinyl release via the Young Turks label.
